What they agree on

France's interior ministry estimated about 320,000 marched on Saturday, fewer than the previous weekend; it reported 565 arrests. Youth-led protests also took place in German cities, where shops were looted in Frankfurt and police used water cannon in Cologne. Both sides condemn attacks on police and want young people's prospects to improve.

Where they truly differ

Turnout: German authorities counted as many as 18,000 in three cities, about half the organisers' estimate (BBC).

The paradox

Most marches were peaceful, but the violence at the margins dominates many headlines.

Open questions

  • What are the protesters' main demands?
  • How have governments responded?
  • Shared question: what would answer the protesters' demands without rewarding the violence?
