Quiet story: Hackney's Green-run council drops its opposition to the Edmonton incinerator rebuild it had pledged to try to cancel (Evening Standard only)

Hackney's Green Party pledged before the May 2026 local elections to 'explore every option to cancel' the rebuild of the Edmonton waste incinerator, which serves seven north London councils. The Evening Standard reports that the new Green administration now says abandoning the £1.5bn project would be financially and environmentally 'devastating'. Campaigners including Extinction Rebellion, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth have long opposed the rebuild.
