Quiet story: the government proposes lifting the Land Registry paywall to show who owns England and Wales; campaigners warn big landowners may resist (Guardian only)
The government on Tuesday set out proposals to open up Land Registry ownership data, arguing it would help build homes, protect nature and improve planning; the plans go to an eight-week public consultation and would let public bodies access the data free of charge. Guy Shrubsole, author of Who Owns England?, welcomed the 'bold but sensible' proposal but warned the biggest landowners may try to scupper it and urged people to respond. Only one rated outlet in our sample covered it in the last 48h (The Guardian, centre-left). Who owns land, and who can see it, is a core political-economy question. Sources: The Guardian.
