Israelis vote in a pivotal election widely seen as a verdict on Netanyahu

Polls opened at 7am on Tuesday for Israel's 26th Knesset, with more than 7.3 million eligible voters and 38 parties competing for 120 seats, the first general election since the 7 October 2023 attack. Recent polls put Gadi Eisenkot's Yashar party ahead of Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud, but neither bloc is projected to reach a 61-seat majority. Exit polls are due at 10pm Israel time.

Deep dive

The two opposites side by side, seeking to understand rather than judge. These are possible readings of the coverage, built from the articles linked on this page; they are not claims about anyone's motives. How we write it.

Seen from the left

“Israel election 2026 live: Polls open as Netanyahu faces tough test” Al Jazeera

A possible reading: the vote is a verdict on the leadership that presided over 7 October and the war.

May be protecting: democratic accountability for the war.

Seen from the right

“Israel Heads to the Polls in Pivotal Election — Trump Backs Netanyahu, Polls Show Deadlock” Breitbart

A possible reading: the vote is about who keeps Israel secure against Iran and its allies.

May be protecting: continuity and security under threat.

What they agree on

Israel is voting in its first general election since 7 October 2023; polls show neither bloc reaching 61 seats. Both want Israelis to be safe.

Where they truly differ

Polls disagree on whether Eisenkot's Yashar or Likud will be the largest party.

The paradox

Both camps present the vote as existential, which makes compromise after the count harder.

Open questions

  • Which small parties are near the threshold, and how could they change the blocs?
  • What coalitions are arithmetically possible if neither bloc reaches 61?
  • Shared question: what kind of coalition could govern if neither bloc reaches 61?
