Israel detains a Scottish Green MSP and an SNP MP among international delegates barred from entering the West Bank

Israeli authorities held Scottish Green MSP Kate Nevens and SNP MP Lara Bird for about eight hours and refused them entry to the West Bank, The National reports. They were part of a 23-person international delegation, also including Labour MP Clive Lewis and former Labour MP Sam Tarry, travelling to meet Palestinian farmers and families during the olive harvest. Lewis told the Guardian the group was 'interrogated'.

Deep dive

A short prompt for thinking it through. We write a fuller side-by-side deep dive for the day's biggest stories.

The paradox: Elected representatives travel to see conditions for themselves, and the visit itself becomes the story.

What each side may be protecting: Left: scrutiny and solidarity. Right: a state's control of its border.

A question to hold: Shared question: on what grounds can elected foreign officials be refused entry?

Try it: open one left and one right article in Sources by lean and note what each takes for granted.
