Holding the paradox

Agreed facts

The Metropolitan Police confirmed it received a letter in 2019 with claims about Thomas Markle, passed it to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex but not to other law enforcement agencies, and is reviewing its handling. Authorities in the Philippines are investigating allegations against him; he denies wrongdoing.

Where claims conflict

When the letter was received (BBC first reported 2018) and whether the Met should be referred to the police watchdog.

What each side is protecting

Left: child protection and police accountability. Right: proper process and the family's privacy.

Common ground

All agree the claims should have been handled properly.

The paradox

A story about a royal family feud has become a question about how police handle child-protection tips.

The bridge

Shared question: what should a force do with a tip about offences abroad?
